I have chosen Special Effects Make-Up as my chosen option due to the fact that I have always had a keen interest in this area of work. Also for the fact that when I complete my Course at University I would love to wok in the T.V and Film industry and I feel Special Effects Make-Up is a good skill to use when entering this area of work. So therefore, I am extremely excited to learn more about what this unit involves.
My previous experience in Special Effects is some of the work which I created in my first year and also some work which I have done on my own outside of University just practising on myself. So I don't have a huge amount of experience in the Special Effects but this is why I chose it as my option so I could develop my skills further. Below are some photos of some of my work which I have created at University and in my own time.
My expectations for Special Effects is to just gain more knowledge and a better understanding of what it entails. I specifically chose this option so I could improve on my skills in this area of work so I am hoping that I will be able to accomplish this. I will make sure I practice a lot in my own time as well as at University just so I get more practice so I can feel more confident within my work.
My fears of this unit are that I may struggle and won't be able to get to grips with it all as I feel with Special Effects that it is a lot more tricky than what it looks. Another fear I have is that I will struggle with my confidence as this is something I tend to do and I am also very critical of my work, however this is something I am working on so I am hoping throughout this unit I will be able to build on that and eventually overcome it.

In this unit we will be exploring how changing shape and texture can alter the appearance of the human face and body and we will develop an awareness of materials to distort, age and texture the skin. This will be used as the basis for creative design development and will establish the relationship between research, design and realization. We will also develop an understanding of how complex techniques can be used creatively and will be encouraged to expand on an enquiring approach to the technical development of creative Make-Up for a specific beauty and fashion industry context.
The areas in which we will be studying are:
- Effective use of visual communication
- Analytical and critical approaches to the design process and the relationship between research and design development
- Principles of advanced Special Effects and Prosthetics
- Knowledge of appropriate terminology and techniques used in advanced Special Effects Make-Up and Prosthetic processes
- Health and Safety workshop practices
